Transferring Membership Rewards points – step by step

How German Amex points get to a frequent flyer or hotel programme – and what to check first, because a transfer cannot be undone.

1. Look for the award before you transfer

First search for the award directly with the partner programme. Only transfer once it shows as bookable there. Points calculator

2. Link your partner account once

Add your partner account with its membership number in the American Express Membership Rewards area, or sign up there. Your details at Amex and the partner must be identical – even a “Dr.” in the name can prevent linking.

3. Transfer the points

Each partner has its own rate, minimum transfer and increment. The transfer is final.

4. Use transfer bonuses

American Express sometimes gives more miles per transfer for a limited time. Current transfer bonuses

5. Book the award

Once the miles are in your partner account, you book directly with the partner; taxes and fees usually come on top.
